Section of Solids - 5

Learn Basics Engineering Graphics EG Tutorial As Per GTU < Kachhua

Dear Students,

Good Morning and a warm welcome to today's class.

It feels really nice to meet up for yet another class this morning.

We will move ahead with the topic, Section of Solids

Topic: Section of Solids

1. What is sectioning?

When a solid object is cut by some imaginary cutting plane to understand internal details of that object, it is called as 'Sectioning the Object'

2. What is a section plane?

The plane that cuts the object in two parts, is called as the Section Plane.

3. Types of cutting planes.

Depending upon the inclination of the planes, there can be the follwoing cases.

a. Section plane parallel to HP
b. Section plane parallel to VP
c. Section plane inclined to HP
d. Section plane inclined to VP

4. Characteristics of cutting planes

a. A cutting plane parallel to the HP, is visible in the VP as a line
b. A cutting plane parallel to the VP, is visible in the HP as a line.

Exercise - Sections of Solids - 5

C. Section plane inclined to HP

Q1. A hexagonal pyramid of base edge 40 mm and axis length 70 mm is placed on the HP with two of its base edges parallel to the VP. It is cut by a cutting plane inclined to the HP at 30 degrees and 30 mm below its apex. Draw the section of the frustum.

Q2. A cone of diameter 40 mm and axis length 70 mm is placed on the HP in the upright position. It is cut by a cutting plane inclined to the HP at 30 degress and passing through the axis at its centre. Draw the section of the frustum.

Q3. A square pyramid of base edge 30 mm and axis length 70 mm is placed on the HP on its square base with two of its base edges parallel to the VP. The solid is cut by a cutting plane inclined to the HP at 45 degrees and passing through the centre of its axis. Draw the section of the solid so obtained.

Q4. A pentagonal prism of base edge 30 mm and axis length 70 mm is placed on the HP with one of its base edges parallel to the VP. It is cut by a cutting plane inclined to the HP at 45 degrees. Draw the section of the solid so obtained.

Q5. A pentagonal pyramid of base edge 35 mm and axis length 70 mm is placed on the HP with one of its base edges perpendicular to the VP. It is cut by a cutting plane inclined to the HP at 45 degrees 20 mm below its apex. Draw the section of the solid so obtained.
